Product goals

  1. 01Enable healthcare insurances to make data-driven decisions for their members.
  2. 02Transform complex healthcare data into actionable insights and actions via AI.
  3. 03Enable AI to support and manage member risk, and act on it before health risk increases.
  4. 04Create campaigns for members and providers that speed up processes instead of relying on manual calls.

About the client

AssureCare is a prominent player in the American healthcare system, serving 56M+ Americans with healthcare management solutions for payers, members, AI & Data Analytics, providers, pharmacy, nutrition, and configuration tools. They also offer a member web and native app to help members take ownership of their health.

Initial briefing

The project kicked off with the VP of Product sharing the briefing: the company needed a solid, brand-new, AI- and data-driven product to help their customers make better decisions about their patients' health. The goal was to launch an MVP in a couple of months to demo to clients and get buy-in, while we kept working on product growth in parallel.

Discovery, Strategy & Research, business and users

Since we didn't have users at the start, I began with a competitor analysis of direct and indirect players, including AI tools, data analytics, and data-visualisation products, to understand their offerings and how we could differentiate. I also talked to SMEs (Subject Matter Experts) to understand their needs better.

From that analysis, we identified an opportunity to merge the best of those products, fulfill SMEs' needs, and add a Campaign Management tool tailored for healthcare and interconnected with AssureCare's flagship product. That defined the main features.

Define & wireframe

The team already had a Design System in place, but the VP of Product wanted something brand new to differentiate the product. I decided to use Figma Variants and Variables to build a new Design System on top of the existing one, a way that wouldn't require significant rework from front-end developers.

We also started testing automated ways to export components so front-end developers could build faster and more confidently, without worrying too much about aesthetics, spacing, or visual consistency (the Design System already handled that). This freed them to focus on what mattered most at that stage: API integrations and back-end connections that would power the product's data layer.

First design concept

Concept pillars

  • Web app integrated with the flagship product to capture member health data, risk scores, medications, utilization management, etc.
  • Ability to integrate with other sources for complete oversight of members, including data from healthcare competitors.
  • A suite of features that allows companies to include or exclude functionalities according to their needs.
  • A companion mobile app to surface AI highlights on the go.

Main functionalities

  • Executive homepage for high-level oversight by executives and C-level stakeholders.
  • Dashboards with drill-downs, filters, sorting, date-range selectors, aggregation, trend lines, cross-filtering, real-time updates, KPI reordering, export, and AI suggestions.
  • Dashboard creation from scratch or from templates.
  • AI agent with chat, prompt templates, workflows, and best-next-step / recommended actions to improve results or create new campaigns.
  • Integration Ecosystem for linking to other healthcare products, including competitors.
  • Member dashboard based on risk level and cohorts.
  • Campaign Builder with libraries of cohorts and artefacts to speed up the process.

User testing

I tested with 5 users that matched Akumen's target profile, and had all Product Managers, Business Analysts, and SMEs review the work to make sure we were covering every edge case the team could think of. Interfaces were presented without explanation, similar to an unmoderated usability test, and I collected feedback and insights to keep iterating.

Handoff, follow-up & iterate

Since we were working with offshore developers, for each completed functionality I described, screen by screen, what each feature and UI component should do, and where users should be routed. Async communication had to work first-time. I also documented behavior and flow conditionals in Figma, covering screen links, toasters, messages, and edge cases, so we had everything in place before coding started.

We ran daily meetings to align, review features, and keep moving the MVP forward.

Results

  • 5 out of 5 customers who saw the product expressed interest and signed up for the pre-release.
  • A 7-day MVP buildout to introduce Voice AI capabilities to the Campaign Management product was delivered and demoed successfully.
  • New Design System shipped without significant front-end rework, freeing engineering to focus on API and data-layer work.

What the team said

We just finished up with the [customer] demo and it went flawlessly. I want you to know this was no short of pulling a rabbit out of a hat. You did an amazing job and were the backbone of all of this effort.

VP of Product

I second, third, fourth and fifth this sentiment. Amazing job and phenomenal effort.

Director of Product

Agree wholeheartedly. None of this would have been possible without you. Thank you sincerely for all the effort and talent you put into this, it was very well received.

Director of Pharmacy Strategy

The whole feature looks incredible. Special shoutout to Natalia. As I mentioned to this team, this is how it starts: slowly at first, then all at once. Let's keep up this momentum to deliver better product experiences.

VP of Engineering

Natalia brought commitment to detail and curiosity, consistently identifying elements that could be improved, particularly from the perspective of universal design. She sought to understand the deeper purpose of what we were building. With a deft hand at Figma, she applied her research and understanding to fit complex data and business constraints into genuinely engaging designs. She also provided substantive input on product strategy, go-to-market, growth opportunities, and brand identity, contributions that are uncommon in a designer and invaluable on a team navigating competing priorities.
